Interactive Installation Pavilion | Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur
Genggaman is an environmental art installation inspired by the gesture of hands holding together to form a circle, symbolizing unity, collaboration, and shared strength among ASEAN nations. The circular form represents the idea of inclusivity, no beginning and no end, a space where differences come together to create harmony.
Constructed using locally sourced natural materials, each element of the pavilion carries its own meaning: random leaves symbolize unity in diversity, bamboo leaves reflect trust, coconut leaves express respect, palm leaves signify resilience, and thatch embodies hope for a collective future. Each value is represented through different natural materials sourced from the surroundings:
These layers of natural textures form the pavilion’s outer skin, while woven ropes and knots bind them together representing connection, collaboration, and the bond between nations. The rhythmic repetition of its structural elements creates a sense of growth and movement, reflecting ASEAN’s continuous progress and adaptability.
Inside the installation, visitors are invited to take part in the narrative. They collect fallen leaves from the park and place them into Center Piece within the structure. This simple act of contribution transforms the pavilion into a living symbol of unity, continuously evolving as more visitors participate.
Through its materiality, rhythm, and participatory nature, Genggaman embodies ASEAN’s collective spirit — many cultures, many stories, bound together in one shared embrace.
